Top five reasons East London is the best place to work

In recent years, East London has undergone a major renaissance that today makes it one of the capital’s most desirable places to work and live. From thriving business communities representing many sectors, to world-class universities, great outdoor spaces and a unique maritime history, there are endless things to do and see here. Add to this, we are home to London’s only Enterprise Zone, and continue to attract thousands of new jobs, residents, visitors, and recreational opportunities.

We compiled a list of the top five things we believe makes East London such a great location to set up business.

Centre of trade

The Royal Docks was once London’s gateway to world trade, handling hundreds of thousands of tonnes of cargo from across the globe. Factories along the dock buzzed with activity as workers processed commodities from meat and spices, to alcohol and clothing. Today, ExCeL London, near Royal Victoria Dock, continues to facilitate trade from around the world, playing host to hundreds of industry events each year. This brings together leading professionals from sectors such as tech, aviation, logistics and finance, helping to generate more than £2.3 billion to the British economy.

Thriving talent pool

East London is home to some of the capital’s leading educational institutions, including the University of East London – soon to be a tenant at RAD. This growing talent pool is increasingly being noticed by employers, with more choosing to set up shop here as a result. One industry in particular is the tech sector, attracted by the area’s affordability and great transport links. At RAD, we have worked closely with the tech community from the onset, building bridges across the sector and providing a space where collaboration and innovation can thrive.

Green space galore

Access to nature is important for everyone’s health, but studies show it can also help employees be more productive as well as lead to higher levels of happiness. For this reason alone, East London is the place to be. The Royal Docks area boosts a plethora of parks, communal areas, and walking and bike trails decorated by public art. And of course, we have our world-famous waterfront, offering sweeping views of the London skyline.

Great transport links

Many people falsely believe that East London is hard to get to. This is not true. Thanks to three DLR stations, it only takes five minutes to get from RAD to Canary Wharf, 13 minutes to Liverpool Street, and 20 minutes to Bond Street. We are located a stone’s throw from London City Airport, which makes the area perfect for international business travellers. The Elizabeth Line, when opened, will bring in even more options.

Mixing the old and new

Our rich maritime history has left a legacy of industrial architecture. From the docks themselves to buildings like the Tate & Lyle sugar factory, there is an incredible array of architecture to discover. Compressor House, at RAD, often holds events celebrating the history of our local area, and we encourage you to check it out.
