RAD to host Clipper Round the World Yacht Race finish festivities this summer

This year the Royal Albert Dock, part of London’s Royal Docks, is set to be transformed when it hosts the finale of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which will be one of London’s biggest-ever outdoor sporting events.

Thousands of spectators are expected to witness the 700 individuals from 11 teams as they complete the 40,000-nautical mile challenge around the globe.

The Clipper Race partnership with RAD and the Royal Docks team launched last September in London when the teams first took off on their 11-month journey, with stopovers in New York, the Australian Whitsundays, Panama, and Bermuda.

RAD was chosen to host the final leg of the race thanks in part to its rich maritime history as a centre of global trade, as well as to serve as further reinforcement for the area's global connections.

In the past year, RAD has become an exciting hub for events serving the global business community and local residents alike, from December’s New Economy, Meet New City tech conference, to the EFG London Jazz Festival and the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival programme last summer.

Speaking about the race finishing in the Royal Docks, The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “We’re thrilled that next year’s Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will finish right here in London in the Royal Docks. Our city truly is the sporting capital of the world and this is further proof that London is open to the biggest and best sporting events.”

ABP’s Chairman, Xu Weiping, said: “Hosting the Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race Finish celebrations is the perfect opportunity for people across the globe to see the transformation of Royal Albert Dock into a new international business district and more importantly, it’s a superb way to reflect the qualities of courage and to demonstrate the confidence, commitment and investment into this location in East London.”
